MicroMacro - Crime City

I call this post a board game, but the name is debatable. MicroMacro - Crime City is a big city map game that doesn't use boards or cards. In fact, playing cards against the wall can be much easier than throwing them around on the table. But even though it's very different from any board game I've ever seen, MicroMacro is a fantastic detective game. It's easier to show than to explain, so thanks, there are online displays .

However, MicroMacro returns to Mana Vali/Waldo 's book. The book is part of the challenge of finding a specific character in a large image filled with many other characters. However, in the Waldensian book, the work ends only with micro-macro. Multi-character city maps are not instant images, time passes as you move from one place to another. This way you will be able to find the same character more than once on the map and follow his story. Often the direction a character is moving is a hint as to where the previous image in the series and the next image are.

In this case, the game will find cards that ask questions about the plot. For example, you may first be asked to identify a specific crime scene and make some general recommendations; You may then be asked where the victim has been in the past or where the perpetrator has gone. Having traced all these episodes in time, you will finally find out the whole history of the crime. As I said, it's better to play the demo above to understand the principle.

MicroMacro is a type of game that you can take with you to family get-togethers during the upcoming holidays. Almost anyone can play. After several complaints, the developer added age restrictions for various issues; So if you have a child who doesn't want to deal with murder or betrayal, you can get a non-critical charge. But when a small exhibition of coats opens somewhere on the map, everything is very harmful and children over 10 years old should not be surprised. The main attraction of the macro is that you can find people who have never played board games. And this is a very positive experience, and everyone, regardless of age, always feels happy and smart when they agree to the card.

The game already has two versions: Crime City and Crime City - Full House. In Europe, it costs between 20 and 25 ውሮፓ, but Amazon.com says the game is hard to find in North America. If you want to play alone, with your adult or the whole family, I recommend this game.

An outdated way to watch TV

About a year ago, I bought an Apple TV 4K device, mainly for TV services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or YouTube. This purchase includes one year of free use of Apple TV+, and this free year will end soon. Unlike most subscriptions, Apple TV+ subscriptions can't be canceled right away and can be watched until the last day; If you leave it, you will lose access, so if you want to use it until the last day, you will have to cancel it on the last day.

So what have I seen on Apple TV+ in a year? Small! The mythical search was correct, only the "Quarantine" section was truly wonderful. Ted Lasso turning into a stupid premise (“What if they hired a football coach to coach British football?”) turns into a very visual comedy. And a morning show with many stars, but otherwise worth watching.

So I see what I want and then I unsubscribe? Not so fast! Ted Lasso and The Morning Show for the second season. And you can't have breakfast. A weekly episode is released: "The next episode will be out next Friday." Yes of course? I think it's a very old way of giving television. Ted Lasso - in the 12th series of 12, and in the 2nd season of "Morning Show" - only in the 2nd series of 10. If I want to see the season finale, I have to subscribe to Apple TV + for two months. I'm sorry, Reese and Jennifer, but I won't do that even if it's only $4.99 a month.

Of course, Netflix has more and better original content, and Amazon Prime has the rest. Also, Amazon Prime is almost free when I exclude the cost savings on shipping my orders from Amazon. Unlike Apple TV+, the original cancellation scam doesn't exist and most sessions are streamed live. Anyone who's a little scared of subscribing to a lot of stuff should switch to Apple TV+!

Worst of both worlds?

I recently heard about a board game called Paolo, which won the “Game of the Year ” award. And I'm not 100% sure I want it. On the one hand, playing alone or together, it meets my criteria for some kind of development and interesting options. On the other hand, I'm not sure if this game can tell a story without words. I'm not a big fan of abstract games. Critics, however, say that Pale mastered the art of storytelling. So before I bought this game, I thought of a way to try this.

I learned that Paleo is free to play on Tabletopia online . I've never used Tabletopia or similar software like Tabletop Simulator. Basically, I heard about Tabletop Simulator and most of the games are "fan made", which I think are "hacked". But the games on Tabletopia are public releases made by the developer, which makes this option even more interesting (your mileage may vary.)

All of this ends as developer Paolo thought when you made the game available for free. Remember, if you live in North America and you're finding it really hard to get there, you might consider ordering the game on Amazon.com for $40. You can find English rule books online , and the card names aren't relevant to the game, so it doesn't matter what the foreign language is.

But paleo's experience at Tabletopia taught me why developers are willing to play for free and why I wouldn't pay $99 per year for a gold subscription that lets me play non-free games. Board games seem very difficult and embarrassing in simulation software. It combines board game crashes, such as managing all components and all accounting, with computer game crashes, losing cards and dice. After playing Paleon, I decided that I would definitely choose to play the physical version, even alone, but especially with my wife.

As mentioned recently, I love digital versions of board games like Gloomhaven. However, the user interface of this software is designed to automate some game mechanics. I've seen it play independent digital field games, when I select an option on the map, the game will automatically add and remove resources and place cards in the correct pile. But dragging all your resources, tokens and cards by hand to Tabletopia isn't very fast. And when I have to do everything by hand, I choose the right physical version.

Don't read this, play a game instead!

Lately I have been losing strength, especially in the evening when I return from work. As a result, I've been spending most of my evenings lately, such as watching videos on YouTube. And because of my interest in games, many of these videos were about games. If you like games, it's a little good, sometimes it's good to see what everyone is playing և to see if you missed the game. But my attitude these days is not entirely confusing, I'm * very * aware of all kinds of board games, video games, I seldom play anything.

And then, of course, I realized that by creating game content on my blog, I was deepening the problem. Why are you reading this instead of playing the game? To some extent, blogging, as old as media, has one major advantage over YouTube videos. It's easy to read in the office, pretending to work. Many companies live under the illusion that each employee works 40 hours a week. In fact, the amount of work you do in the office can fluctuate, and sometimes you wait for someone to give you information to continue. A certain amount of web browsing is perfectly normal if the content is "not safe to work with", which is usually text walls.

But when you read at home, you play a game. Why not?

Ethnic representation in games and cultural imperialism

Do you think there should be a representative race for the characters in games? If so, what population are we talking about?

Today comes my copy of the Paleo board game. This is the third version of the Game of the Year logo. Other than that, there is almost no difference from the first version. Due to the very strong protests of the Americans and the British who woke up, many of the characters in the game are now black. It is a problem because it does not represent the entire race of the population.

Paleo is designed and manufactured in Germany and sold primarily in Europe. In fact, the game is very difficult to obtain in the US because it was not created for this market and is not directly distributed there. Today, Germany is a largely multicultural society, and a quarter of the population has immigrated since 1949 to parents and has "immigrant origins" that they identify. As you walk the streets, you will see many different nationalities and religions. The main groups come from Turkey, Eastern Europe (including Russia) and the Balkans and since 2015 more than one million people have migrated from Syria.

There are no large numbers of blacks or East Asians in Germany. Less than 1% of Germans are black. This is a direct consequence of the fact that Germany never imported large numbers of slaves from Africa and had little effect on colonization (they didn't want to, but they arrived late and were expelled early). before World War II). This means that the first version of the Paleo ethnos on the streets of Cologne, where the game was created, was the perfect representation of the people you meet. It is certainly different from the ethnic mix in London or Washington. The third edition of Paleo ethnic mix belongs to Washington, but more to Cologne. This does not match the ethnic composition of Beijing. Or an ethno-historical mixture of the Paleolithic people. (Wake up only cares when historical accuracy is appropriate, see The Witcher 3).

When the creators of Paleo had to change the ethnicity of the characters in the game to reflect the racial mix of the United States, to reflect the racial mix of their own country, it was very similar to the cultural imperialism that woke me up. I mean, I can understand why Americans assert that black representation in their country is important to them, based on the guilt they feel about slavery and the racial mix that comes from this story. But perhaps the Germans had a different sense of guilt than slavery. Even for a very brilliant German, the reflection of blacks in games is only so important that he brought his brilliance from America. And if we're talking about global race, why would the German game want to represent an ethnic mix of the US and not, say, Chinese?

We need more Jaws of the Lion

So yesterday I got a copy of the Paleo board game for 40 euros (including shipping) from Amazon. Another Kickstarter board game called Mythwind was launched yesterday. If you compare the images of the Paleo և Mythwind (main game) components, the physical number of the game is roughly the same with both. But Mythwind in its most basic version costs 72 euros + 22 euros for shipping. If you buy it internally, if you add a miniature Figure 5, you will pay 150 euros, including shipping. And honestly, I don’t think it’s going to be 2-4 times more fun with Mythwind than with Paleo.

When it comes to board games, especially crowdfunding board games, there is a certain trend in 2021 that the value of money is significantly worse than in previous years. There are several reasons for this. First, VAT does not apply to Kickstarter games. The small volumes, plus the subtle excitement that customers were “gifted” money in exchange for a “reward,” held on to tax auditors for a while, but no longer. For Europe, this directly means that everything is going up by around 20%. Another factor is that most board games are made in China and this year shipping costs from China have risen significantly. And finally, Kickstarter’s specific business model, where you now pay և to get your products later, means that companies need to take inflation into account և to sell their products at next year’s prices. which was not possible when inflation was very low, but which is becoming increasingly important today.

These trends do not coincide with another trend: duxification. One of the reasons why Mythwind is more expensive than Paleo is that the trays of Paleo characters are made of 2D cardboard, while Mythwind is made of 3D plastic. This has its value. That’s also an advantage, but not everyone needs nicer ingredients. This year I was very impressed with the Fall game. Legends of the Dark was $ 175 in exchange for MSRP. Yes, the game has beautiful little high quality images և 3D Landscape. But many prefer 2D space և cardboard blocks, which means the game is worth half the price. Of course, different people have different amounts of income, some can easily afford $ 175 board games. But I can’t compare that to the AAA PC game, which will probably give you the same entertainment / time value as a third party. even cheaper if you wait a while to release it.

Gloomhaven is a great example for me. Jaws of the Lion, offering the usual alternative to Gloomhaven at mid-price. Fewer components, but the same basic behavior, and the added advantage of a faster setup is cheaper than the original. I would buy Descent. Jaws of the Lion, but the original is too rich for me. In fact, I want to ask board game manufacturers to always offer a cardboard version instead of a miniature version. Not everyone appreciates miniatures equally, not everyone knows how to paint, so to some extent, monochromatic miniatures are worse than colored cardboard. they are stationary.

Hacking the win condition in your head

So I played the first game of the new board game I got this week, Paleo, alone and quickly lost. Then I kept playing until I met the win condition. Paleo uses a relatively simple algorithm to determine wins and losses: you get 5 "winner" points before you get 5 "loser" points. However, the lack of point loss counters (skulls) does not prevent you from continuing to play after reaching 5 skulls. Standing on 5 heads makes sense if you want a faster game. But at some point, if you don't want to stop and start over after growing your tribe, another win condition also makes sense: play until you win and try to do it with as few skulls as possible. Since Paleo is a game that tends to get better with experience, if you keep repeating the same scenario over and over, you're more likely to do it with fewer skulls and at least 5 at a time.

In competitive games, other players are guaranteed to win. In single player and co-op games where you play against the system (or AI), victory is conditional. It's a bit like jumping high in a stadium alone: what is victory? If you jump higher than before, even if it's much lower than the world record, it would be enough for most people.

The great thing about tabletop games is that there isn't a computer that throws you off course with the "Game Over" screen. It is up to you to follow the suggested course of action when you reach a state of victory or defeat. But once you understand that the terms winning or losing are arbitrary, you can decide to change them up based on what you like best. Some people like to start over, while others like to keep playing.

I think over time I'll get better at paddling, getting past the first 'easy' level and moving on to intermediate and harder. But if I didn't improve and couldn't manage a certain level of difficulty, I wouldn't want to miss these last very difficult stages. Although I find it "very difficult" to follow the developers' arbitrary rules, I prefer to change the win/loss conditions and play difficult scenarios. I'm also planning to go to Spiel Essen 2021 in a week and maybe get an extension for Paleo. Getting harder DLCs for a game you haven't beaten would be foolish. but if for some reason the paleo expansion is too difficult, "hacking" the win condition is an obvious way to solve the problem.

Are social media affecting game design?

When was the last time you heard about a new game from a print magazine? If you're like me, these days you often discover a new online game: social networks, news readers, YouTube shows, etc. Gave a video review via YouTube today, learned about Vagrus - The Riven Realms , indie -role-playing game with a strong commercial element. Write me! However, I may not feel that regular YouTube is bad for the game: Vagrus is so mired in intrigue that it doesn't make a good watch-while-play video.

Dungeons & Dragons, which fell out of favor in the fourth edition, returned in the fifth edition thanks to videos of people playing the game. If the DM is a good showman like Chris Perkins or Matt Mercer, then D&D 5th edition is a very good look. Bigger than the 4th edition which is a bit more mechanical. And I don't think Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast knows anything about it. Apparently, they are currently working on version "5.5" , which will be released for their 50th anniversary in 2024. I'm sure these days when making game design decisions, they're asking themselves "what is a YouTube game like?".

Streaming devices playing indie games on Twitch are becoming an increasingly important marketing channel for these smaller games. You can notice, by the way, that these streamers are served by independent companies that, for example, create NPCs in a game with a streaming device interface. But this again means that potential customers will experience the game by watching it being played; and "How does it look good?" It becomes the design standard.

It's not necessarily bad. Watching a game they play gives me a much better idea than a printed review. But there are things that I like about games, like the story, and that hurts. If your streaming device has great voice acting, playing video game stories is usually unimpressive. The same story wouldn't shock you too much if you read it while playing. And so I'm wondering how social media like YouTube and Twitch will eventually influence game design to make something more flashy and less reflective.

Vagrus - The Riven Realms

In 2004, I wrote a blog about how I would like to see commerce implemented in a fantasy RPG, buy at low prices, take the risky journey of transporting goods elsewhere, and sell them. At the time I wanted it to be an MMORPG, but after 17 years of waiting, I would have chosen Vagrus - The Riven Realms as the next best thing. Finally, there is a game in which I can ride a traveling caravan through a dangerous fantasy world.

Although I enjoy this game a lot, I can clearly see how it will not be for everyone. The post-apocalyptic environment in the Bronze Age includes cruel things like slaves, which some people do not consider politically correct (even if modeled after the Roman era, where many slaves were white). The game is also very challenging, and you have to play it with the simplest level of difficulty. It is full of stories and traditions that often appear on the long walls of text.

But all this does not bother me. Vagrus plays as a great mix of business management and fantasy adventure. Drive a caravan of huge monsters, mountains, knights, soldiers, explorers, workers and slaves above. There is a large map, with many still undiscovered locations, which you slowly discover by launching quests or listening to gossip. You can travel on the road or across the desert, with the desert being the most dangerous, but also providing more opportunities for hunting or foraging. The supplies you need to feed everyone occupy a large portion of your cargo space, and you will need to maintain a good balance between the amount of animals your cargo space provides, the manpower you require and the guards that protect them.

In addition to buying low and selling high, you can also accept freight commitments from different factions or passenger transportation. You can also find different "friends", each with their own story. There are two combat systems, one in which you fight your entire convoy and one in which you fight only your comrades. The latter is often used for various missions and adventures that you may encounter. You can focus on being a merchant, more adventurous, or more exploratory. The whole game is a large sandbox, with a very small grip, so it is recommended to stock it regularly. Things can quickly go wrong and cause the entire trailer to disappear.

Vagrus is a standalone game, so it's not that expensive. The downside is that the community is very small. If I get stuck on a mission in Baldur's Gate 3, there are thousands of websites that can provide me with ongoing information and information. As for Vagrus, I couldn't even find the basic info of what I had to do to start my personal quest for my friend ork Gor'Goro, which I needed to pass to level 2. Well, I'll meet that one for sure. Sometimes, I explore. So yeah, Vagrus is kind of a cozy game, but it's the real place for me!

Spiel Essen 2021

The Spiel in Essen is the largest board game fair in Europe. It usually happens every year but definitely not last year. And since recently rediscovering my love for board games, I haven't really been there in three decades. But this year I left. Unfortunately Saturday was the worst day but work didn't allow me to go on the first day which is quieter. I might do it next year. Overall it worked: I bought 4 games: the New Beginnings Paleo expansion pack, which was released on the first day of the convention; Fates plus Sea of Sand expansion, a game I doubted but then got a conditional discount. Suspects, a new card-based detective game; And finally Mortum. Medieval Detective, a game I had never heard of before but was interested in learning Witcher style detective stories.

The main downside is that after a full day at the conference, I'm not sure I've seen everything, but my legs hurt a lot to keep going. As part of the outbreak, organizers could easily push the stands to the side, leaving unused space behind the halls. But to enter you needed at least a Covid certificate. I couldn't play as many games as I wanted, it seemed easier for small groups than offering to show someone their game. . So I joined other bands, played Paper Dungeons and Oathsworn. I don't know if I'll get those games later. But even though I couldn't play much, I was given very brief explanations of the games to see if I was interested. Malhya can be crucial, և it seems to me that the game has been in development for a long time since 2018 and even Kickstarter hasn't launched yet.

I was a little embarrassed as I like themed, storytelling games that like to be played together. But in the European table convention, surprisingly, you see the most competitive European games with all kinds of staff building a table with other heavy mechanical gaming elements. Even destinies, guided by stories, are competitive. I have to play with my wife to see how much it bothers us, otherwise I can just play. Only one of the games I sponsored was presented at the conference (Nova Aetas Renaissance). I'd love to see more, at least check them out while waiting for the Kickstarters release.

Anyway, I've gone too far. I booked an airport hotel 15 minutes south of convention which was much cheaper than hotels further afield. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I only paid $6 a day for parking at the convention center. And I only paid 175 euros for the games I bought. I even saved some money by eating out of convention, but it was more about relaxing and putting the toys back in the car so I didn't have to take them out. Overall I had a great time but was glad I booked a hotel rather than heading home after a long conference.

Games are too cheap, or why I don't need a board game table

Conventional economic theory assumes that when the price of a product increases, its demand will decrease. The exception to this rule is Veblen products , and that usually applies to certain luxury items: people want them *because* they are so expensive, because thus owning them is a great status symbol. I spent an entire day at a board gaming conference yesterday, and one Veblen product is completely different: a Wyrmwood gaming table that's over 8,500 years old. Sure, there are "cheap" examples that cost less than $1,000, but the ones I saw at the conference cost over $2,000 and one for $13,500. Yes, it's nice to see a table as tall as a used table, but I'm sure I could furnish the whole house if I bought furniture from IKEA for that kind of money.

The reason these tables are different is because there's nothing really valuable at the conference. Yes, you can "upgrade" your board game, for example by buying metal parts to replace the cardboard parts that came with your game. You might be able to double the price of your board game by making it fancy, but it's still not that expensive. There are very few games at convention that cost over $100, and a lot of games that cost $50 or less (all the games I bought were). The most expensive board game I know of is Kingdom Death Monster, 350 gems for the original box and precious metal chess doesn't count. Some of the all-inclusive Kickstarter promises are more expensive, but then you get tons of boxes, expansions, and thumbnails from the game. So how much money do you really spend on your board game hobby?

A board game table has one main feature: a low-key indoor play area, usually with some sort of soft covering, such as felt or neoprene. Advantages: The soft playing surface makes it easy to pick up cards or other playing objects and the fence around the playing field prevents dice or other playing material from falling to the floor. Of course you can do what I did and place the soft material playmat (I used Chesapeake Megamate vinyl) on a regular table and don't roll the dice too hard or use the dice tray. Personally, I sit at a board game table and find fences uncomfortable, especially when trying to play a game that requires you to write something down. I don't really understand what an expensive gaming table would do for my solution. So my only explanation is that people buy board game tables *because* they are expensive. Buy something really nice for yourself or impress a board game group. I decided I didn't need it. And with this money, which saved me from this decision, I will buy a board game for ten years.

Destinies - kind of a review

I wrote a blog post in August about why I do not want to buy Destinies . On Saturday, however, I bought the game, as well as the expansion (at 70 euros, less than it would cost me to buy online) at the Spiel store in Essen. And on Sunday I played a game with my wife to see if we would like to play together and if I would prefer to play alone. In the end, we both liked it and decided to play together, but we did not like it, I will tell you later.

But first I want to talk about why I changed my mind about Destinies. Because it has to do with understanding what I'm looking for in games. In Spiel I had the opportunity to play Paper Dungeons , a "dungeon scroller" that you can spin and type. And it didn’t really excite me. Not that it's a bad game, but because of the main game cycle, this game shares most of the games I saw at the Spiel convention: at each stage, by combining random elements and player decisions, each player manipulates the elements of the game and writing. they (usually in the "fold and write" or "twist and write" genres, the voice is written on a piece of paper, while in other games the voice is represented by meeps and dice on the board); at the end of the match each player changes his record into points; the player with the most points wins. Although Paper Dungeons is technically a prison exploration, there is no narrative experience or step-by-step exploration here.

When you see Spiel Essen's hottest game on BoardGameGeek , it all works that way. There are many different mechanics such as worker placement, mapping, tile placement or engine / office building. But always the decisions of the players change the elements of the game, which are converted into points at the end of the game and whoever has scored the most points wins. I do not really like. I play to gain experience, not to "beat" someone. The most popular convention game, Cueball, looks like this . Difficult, right? The "game" is to figure out these complex graphics and make the move that will ultimately maximize your points. Paper dungeons look like this , both of which are completely different, but again the same task: to understand the complex state of the game and to be able to make a move that will ultimately maximize your points.

How to win in such a contest? There is usually little chance, but if not everyone also understands the game, the degree of understanding is the best indication of who is winning. If you play one of these games for the first time against someone who has played it three times before, that player will almost certainly win. The consequence of winning by understanding is that no one explains their movements; you do not want to tell other players your strategy and why you think doing this or that action is better than what they did. And because of the complexity and ignorance of other players' strategy, you are often surprised by the end result; you thought you were having fun, but you ended up last, or vice versa. You barely understand the full implications of the move you just made, and usually much less than the move other players make. It's all very abstract and all the big surprises end when the points are counted.

I prefer games where every move is an experience, preferably shared with other players. And at least at Spiel, which is a European board game convention, these "American" themed games are rare compared to abstract "euro" point games. I did not buy Destinies because I thought it was the perfect game, but because there were not many games in the style I liked. It's better to buy a game with a strong story every turn and some disadvantages than an abstract European game where the story is not part of every turn I do.

The good news is that Destinies is extremely narratively strong. Almost every turn is a sequence of discoveries, descriptive decisions, throwing the dice to determine success, and discovering the consequences of combining your decision and the results of the dice. This fits in with the description of an "RPG in a box" where the application acts as the pastor. There is also some value in seeing other players' movements, as long as each result is read aloud, as what the other player encounters can give you clues about your goals.

The bad news is that the narrative experience of Destinies is somewhat at odds with the game designer's decision to make the game competitive. To explain it better, the rest of the post will contain heavy treats for the base game entry scenario, you have been warned! Destinies is primarily designed for three players, each playing one of the three main story characters. Each player / character tries to fulfill their "destination". But the fates are mutually exclusive. In the opening storyline at the beginning of the game it is reported that the village is threatened by a wolf and that the mayor has gone missing. Each player has additional hidden information: the nobleman wants to look just like a hero defeating the wolf; the witch is the mayor's mother and believes the wolf is her son, cursed by the witch; the hunter is the witch's lover and knows she wanted to get rid of her husband by turning him into a wolf, this spell only worked half. Each character has two different ways to achieve their fate: the nobleman can collect silver items to get silver weapons to kill the wolf, or organize a mob to help the villagers; the witch can help the villagers to help her break the curse or collect ritual objects to break the spell itself; and the hunter could raise money to kill a wolf with a silver weapon or collect ritual objects to help a witch cast a spell. Therefore, by designing the story, one player's victory prevents the other player (s) from reaching the goal.

In a three-player game, player 1 can choose between paths A and B, player 2 can choose between paths B and C, and player 3 can choose between paths C and A. Ideally, each player chooses a different path. . But according to statistics, if everyone chooses a path at random, in 75% of cases two players will choose the same path and get in each other's path, and the third player will win without resistance. You can change paths in the middle of the game, but you will definitely waste time, which will reduce your chances of winning. In a two-player game, the chance is fifty percent that both players have the same or different goals. And since everyone can see when the first player gets their first silver / ritual / resident item, the second player can change targets if necessary. So for me the game works better with 2 players than with 3.

At the beginning of the game, however, you have no idea where the items you need to collect are located unless you have already played the script. And I would not recommend playing the same scenario twice, the game works best when not all players know what scenario they are playing and everyone has a sense of exploration and discovery. But if no one knows the scenario, then the "victory" of the game has a pretty big chunk of luck. Yes, sometimes you have suggestions, for example if you want to gather the villagers, it makes sense to stay in the village and talk to the people there. But more often than not, you do not know where the items you are looking for are hiding, and you end up more or less randomly deciding which direction to go. I don't usually care about randomness and dice rolls in RPGs, but it's for cooperative games where random outcomes are just added to the story and you "fail". In Destinies with Mutually Exclusive Destinies, if one player wins, the other players are "punished" by having a poor story ending, which they have to endure passively. Only the winner has the pleasure of seeing his story to the end.

If you want, you can just play Destiny. Or you play on a timer, which means if you do not arrive at your destination on time, you can play the scenario again by doing the information you have already learned, and almost automatically do better. Or, if you do not like to do anything over, play in scout mode, which simply means there are absolutely no losing states, and play until you reach your destination. The storylines are interesting enough to apply the game to a single player. but in terms of pure game mechanics, none of the single player options feel satisfying.

Since the base game has 5 scenarios and the expansion has 3, and the script editor and player-created content have yet to be released, my plan is to play this game 8 times in 2-player mode with my wife. Since every move is interesting, the only downside is the pain of disappointment that one of us will inevitably experience when the script is missing. But, since it is "competitive", there are not many opportunities in the game for one player to ruin the other's game, except to accidentally reach the first base, when both players have accidentally chosen the same path. So in general we both do not play competitively or together, but enjoy exploration and discovery at the same time. And that joy of discovery is strong enough to keep the game going, so it does not bother us too much when one of us inevitably fails to fulfill our destiny. We would like to have a fully collaborative version where players work together more towards a common destiny. Yet Destinies is a fun game for both of you.

Games are too expensive, or why I don't need more bones

She wrote on Sunday that they sell for ten or hundreds of dollars at the main box office. However, there is also an expansion. I TRIED IT և I have an original game full of bones for about $400. If you think it's too much , I have proof that it still doesn't work!

Many bones, even the simplest ones, are now a collection of luxury items. If you throw a whole bottle of soda into it while playing, any other board game will be completely destroyed. Not a lot of bones All parts are neoprene or plastic - toy will be washed and dried: Fresh. And the indestructible part of the game has its price. So you can promise $85 for a whole new *or* $130 for the original bone, *or* $90 for separate player-quality paragraphs for less players և much more. GameGeek is a top 40 board game, I'd say you got a good deal. I would recommend their neoprene dice tray so there are no wrinkles, and instead protect the safe cocktail dice.

But it is very easy to get into this game and search for more details. I bought a lot of bones. And now, with a commitment of 1,100 for 151 public bids, it's definitely ending playing many games. How do you play with 17 characters? Especially since not everyone plays once before going to it. I have 7 of them չեմ I haven't played them yet $1100 Pledge the game Never risk playing, because choosing a character, dictator - law to play is a very difficult task. There are many legal variations on the general agreement, which can have many boxes which can be confusing.

From an economic point of view, it's an easy comeback issue. Double the value of the game is twice the fun, but twice as much fun. Although you have a new character fighting a new dictator, and a new villain in a new battle, the initial experience is still the same as the main game. Any great game, but how often do you want to play it? So it is good to have a large amount of healthy bone marrow. There are a lot of good things here.

How to get a Kingdom Death: Monster - like experience at 10% of the cost

I apologize to those who are not very interested in the content of board games, but spend a weekend at a table games exhibition, this is a topic that worries me a lot. So in the last post, I talked about a game that has a lot of value for the main box, the government death monster. And because I don't know much about the game, I've tested some reviews and ways to find out what the game is about (well, I didn't play it * because it lasts forever).

The Death of the Kingdom is a game played by survivors of a low-tech tribe. For example, very low technology, the starting point is a sharp rock, and I consider it as a bone knife, it is simply a sharp bone, a great improvement. There are different levels of the game, and on one level you change the cards to face different events, and on the other you fight monsters. People love the game.

Unfortunately, the Kingdom of Death monster costs only $ 400 for the main game, although there are currently $ 350 special games on sale . What if you can't afford it and want the same experience for something around $ 40 instead of $ 400? This year's Paleo is not too far away and only costs $ 40 (at least importing it into the US in Europe can cost you more.)

Of course, a $ 40 Paleo doesn't offer exactly the same game as $ 400 Kingdom Death: a monster game, but you get to play a game against a remnant of a very low-tech tribe; And you gain experience turning the letters to find different events, which leads to the development story of the game. It's not a tactical "boss warrior" battle in Paleo, but it has basic combat mechanics, and in the end you get gear from the skins, rocks, and wood you get. Paleo scratches the co-existence game where random events can kill you, but you can only defeat them if you gradually develop your tribe's weapons and abilities. In the death of the kingdom, the monster will do this in part from the time and money required for the same experience.

Personally, I love Paleon. And the death of the kingdom is not easy because I think it is expensive and put it on the table because it does not buy the monster. The Death of the Kingdom Monster is a way of life more than a board game. Paolo is a game that can be described in 10 minutes and one night with friends. With the Death of a Monster in the United Kingdom, you can complete the game of paleo in the time required for a full flash year. Of course, different people have different needs for games, but I want to make it clear that there is a faster and cheaper option.

Can you go from competitive to casual?

I have played hundreds of video games. Some are within hours of driving. Many people play for tens of hours, which is usually enough time to finish the game or get bored. A few games that I have played for over a hundred hours are usually long RPGs like Pathfinder. Kingmaker (184 hours) or major games like XCOM 2 (209 hours). Now Steam says there are two games that I have played in my library for over a thousand hours, but they are Forgotten Realms Idle Champions and Shop Titans, games that I have not played actively all the time but have played before. : background.

So the number of video games I have played for over a thousand hours is very small. some MMORPGs, with World of Warcraft at the top of the list (second everquest for about 2,000 hours), followed by World of Tanks, the only multiplayer game. PvP game. that I played hard. Actually, I do not know how many hours I played in World of Warcraft, I have to re-subscribe և use each character / game team to find out, but in 2009 it was 5,000 hours , և probably more than 6,000 hours. when I left. I do not know how many hours I played in World of Tanks, but I do know that on my main account I played 15,366 fights, the average duration of fights is about 6 minutes or 1,500 hours per fight. plus "garage" time.

If you play for tens of hours, you are probably quite experienced, but you can still play "randomly" և not try to master it completely. Although most of the time I accidentally played World of Warcraft (if you have enough content to do so), I did play a bit of a raid. I finished Molten Core, I scored onyx several times, I went up with Nefaryan at Blackwing Lair, so I would say I played at a much more competitive level. But as the attack led to a dramatic neighborhood, I needed to learn more about places like Naxromas. And in WoW, since for many people rating was only a part-time job, it was easy to get back into a temporary game until they finally lost interest in 2018 .

When I last played World of Tanks in the 2019/2020 season, I was playing in competitions, in the sense that my goal was to improve the game, the highest level of players , I was pretty good in the world of tanks . However, in this case, I consider it impossible to return to the game by accident. World of Tanks is a game based on many skills, but it is not a question of motor skills, but a very deep knowledge of each card, the best strategy of different types of tanks in different situations of each of these cards. . I haven't played for a year, I have forgotten a lot. And playing with less skill now than I used to is not fun.

I wonder if it will be the same for people who play Fortnite, League of Legends or any other competitive multiplayer game. Once you have reached a certain level of skill, can you return to normal play?

How long should a board game campaign be?

This weekend I was playing Destinies with my wife and a Gloomhaven digital soloist. On the one hand, there are two extremes, given the length of their campaign. There are a total of 5 scenarios in the Basic Destinations box and another 3 in the expansion. The basic Gloomhaven box has 95 scenarios. A dollar for the stage, Grimharbour has a much better value. But does it matter?

When my wife and I played non-digital Darkhaven, we played 16 scenarios before we lost interest and moved on. As a board game Gloomhaven is difficult to control and not an easy game. A lot of people didn’t finish the campaign. I don’t know if I’ll get to that digitally first, where setup is obviously a lot easier.

Grimharbor not only has more stories than The Fates, it has more repetition in each story. It is useless to repeat the story of Destinies, as the game is mostly about exploration, as it usually tries to find certain elements. Even if you vaguely remember where the elements of the previous game were, you will complete the game faster by defeating the first player who fulfills his goal.

Destiny isn’t a very deep game, but it’s fun to go through a story you don’t know yet. Since the basic structure of each scenario is the same and only the story changes, it is likely that you will not feel hard to play again after playing 5 scenarios from the basic scenario. It’s not that bad when you both feel like you’re running out of content and running out of content at the same time. Gloomy Harbor is like the albatross on the necks of many board players, a great game that we will never finish. I didn’t save Frosthaven because it would be roughly the same and I knew I would never end up there.

I wouldn’t say Destinies is a great game. The writing is a bit blurry in some places, the mechanics of the game are too simple for my liking, and if you’re not playing yourself, you should be quick to get there as soon as possible. as well as a game of exploration and storytelling for its purpose. But Destinies came to the table quickly, my wife and I easily passed the story in the evening and didn’t have to worry about when it was over and it was all over. Maybe board games don’t have to be that much.

Pay before you play

There were a lot of complaints about games for different business models where they could get free games just to pay big bucks for thieves, hijackers and so on. Or it could be a problem, these games have a silver lining. If it is not right to start the game, you will never spend money on it. Genshin Impact costs people a lot * because free play is so cool.

The disadvantage is that it is a buy option, but there are a growing number of business models that require you to pay before the end of the game. It may be on Kickstarter, the business model * to pay before something is done *; Or you can buy a game on Steam in Early Access. And this business model may be wrong for the customer.

The basic premise that is paid before the game is that the dealer wins all or most of the money, that is what motivated him. Some people try to create a compelling Kickstater campaign * rather than a real project. Kickstarter projects are almost always behind schedule. I recently promised The Isofarian Guard that I hope to win the game in 2022, but the "estimated delivery date" on Kickstarter is December 2020.

When I want to know if a game is legal on Steam, I always look for “latest reviews” rather than “all reviews”. You can often see people complaining about the game in recent reviews. The developer is playing an early access game, the cash flow is weak and they "release" incomplete 1.0, others never work on it.

So at least it's nice to see Kickstarter accept the issue. They have recently changed their rules for carrying out many projects . You must now complete at least 4 Kickstarter projects to run multiple Kickstarter campaigns and again the number is limited (this number is for games 3). The content creator must complete their previous projects before returning to Kickstarter for cash. Innovations cannot create a second campaign only when they have no money to complete the first project.

There is no special protection against Steam fraud. They have a regular refund policy but this is not played for more than 2 hours and you bought it in less than 2 weeks. So if you buy a pre-release game you may find it incomplete, but expect a never-ending update and you may not get your money back.

Fixed the drift of my joy-con

Like other Switch owners, I have had a number of problems with the Joy-Con slide and this incident suggests that if you do not touch your controller, it always moves slightly in one direction. I do not have swimming in my right hand, I have a slight slip in my left hand. It's not enough to go through the hassle of sending a replacement, but it's a little difficult.

The good news is that 4 years after the transition took place and the problem first appeared, someone finally understood what the problem was and how to solve it. The problem is the lack of pressure under the controller. And the solution is to take a small square of thick paper (like a business card) and place it on the joy cone behind the commander. And it works! The slide of happiness is completely gone!

I recommend you follow the steps in the IGN edited video . The only bad news is that if your gearbox is not stored separately, you may need to get a Y00 three-point screwdriver and maybe a Philips # 0 screw (I had the latter, but the former is quite a tool ). special). Happiness will cancel your warranty repair, but I prefer an unsupervised supervisor.

I say there is no discovery here, I found the solution only on YouTube, the first video explains the solution for 1 million views . For those unfamiliar with IGN video electronics isolation, it is a bit more structured and easier to understand. Basically, if I can apply this parameter, you can apply it too. :)

Skyrim and market fragmentation

I made another board game on Gamefound (a Kickstarter competitor) ፡ Re Elder Scrolls V ፡ Clear Skyrim Adventure Game . From the big name, you might guess that the Skyrim video game is a version of a board game. As a fan of video games and board games, that sounds like a spectacle, right? But it's actually more complicated.

I'm not a big fan of video games and board games. I'm a fan of video games and I'm a fan of board games. One of the best and newest computer games of the year is Forza Horizon 5, which I will never play. I also don't play high-end board games like Wingspan or Terraforming Mars. I prefer relatively slow games where you have time to think about video games. I don't like games that slowly build to victory at the end of board games, but I prefer games where every step equals an adventure.

As a result, I'm one of the few PC gamers who really dislikes Skyrim. Steam last played in December 2011 and it says I played 21 hours. Just know what the game is about, and the action RPG style was not for me. Skyrim, on the other hand, is a fun board game because it's one of my favorite little board games that tells a story, in this case using multiple tasks and setting cards. My recent visit to the board game shows that the games are few. I once watched a game on YouTube and found it to be a fun adventure to navigate the map, explore dungeons, complete quests, and level up your character.

That said, I'm not a huge Gamefound fan for the Skyrim board game. I took a basic deposit of 68 pounds (80 euros/90 dollars), but if you take into account the postage, it will already be more than 100 euros. But the company will push you to take luxury offers two to three times more expensive. Activities that I have never seen on Kickstarter or Gamefound before, the main promise is almost no goals. I even get basic board games, like three unknown mini-campaigns, only in PDF; Only the highest levels will receive the correct cards. But I'm not interested in the $300 luxury scene, not only because it's so expensive, but because most of the extra money goes into the miniature, a game that doesn't even have a miniature tactical.

Basically, I don't get much benefit from this board game. I usually do this because small board games don't consist of many copies and are often difficult to sell at retail. Even the relatively successful Skyrim Gamefound now boasts nearly 4,000 fans, and tens of thousands of copies of the game are unreleased.

Staying frosty

Frosthaven is known as the largest Kickstarter project with a Kickstarter board game and a budget of up to $13 million. Despite being promised for March 2021, it now appears to be almost a year behind schedule. But as a result of this method and the people behind it who are submitting more information, there is a trend in the discussion of the Frosthaven board game community. I do not endorse Frosthaven Kickstarter nor have I previously placed an order. While I'm interested in the digital version, I have no plans to buy a board game. So what's happening to me or the game?

Frosthaven is a sequel to Glomhaven, currently the top rated board game on the GameGeek board. Frosthaven has a new campaign to create new characters, new gameplay elements, new monsters, new items and more. However, it is basically "More Glomehaven" Frosthaven, you can use your favorite character from Glomehaven in Frosthaven. Aside from some minor tweaks to the rules, the way they play the situation is the same. Frosthaven is the opposite of Glomhaven : The Lions's Mouth, a smaller and more approachable version of Glomhaven. The larger and less accessible version of Frosthaven Gloomhaven comes in a heavy-duty box that's great for your desk.

That's too much for most people. Frosthaven can be a great game, but do I need 138 other conditions to play? For most brands, 25 conditions in a Lion's Jaw can be enough. The first 95 scenes from Glomhaven are also out of place, and the Forgotten Club expansion includes 20 more scenes. How many conditions do you need to bring the game of "my favorite board game" to life?

My advice to many gamers is to try Lion's Jaw if you're looking for a board game and play Gloomhaven Digital if you're a single player (I'm working on it right now). Play it to the end and ask yourself if you really want more. Supplements are not always good when the original will do.

Curse of Strahd - Session 9, 10, and 11

Over the past few months, we have continued our Straded Curse campaign with a few short sessions. From the last reported session, the group crossed the Tsolenka mountain pass and reached the Amber Cathedral. Clear Amber Temple, the second largest module dungeon, սկս start now with the largest և final, Castle Ravenloft. In doing so, the party was like level 9. Adding to their fun relationship with the Forgotten Leach, Tsolenka անց և Amber Temple's seem to fill Castle Ravenloft և a little magic. Ingredients. Most sessions are full of fights. This brings me to the discussion of magic that I began to hate as DM.

On paper, Polymorf looks like a fun charm . You can turn a willing partner into a useful animal or a harmless animal, reminiscent of a World War II game that turns an enemy into a sheep. However, this latest edition is much smaller than the original due to savings. And since Polymorf is level 4 magic, you will not make it to level 7, the magic is just there for the two monkeys to enter the magic game at the level 7 giant monkey party and the Tyrannosaurus Rex for 8. at the level of: "We finished a few combat sessions where two players switched to Tyrannosaurus Rexes.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex 8 level challenge has a lot more points, it will hit your character harder than the regular 8 level. And the game takes an hour if you don't focus on it. But T-Rex has a high constitutional point, և between success և brain injury և it is much easier not to lose focus. So now, like my Gothic horror campaign in the Japanese film Godzilla vs. Dracula, two dinosaurs keep coming in. It's fun once or twice, but it gets old very quickly, it kind of kills the atmosphere in which the regime has entered.

Fortunately, Castle Ravenloft levels are so low that you can't drive a T-Rex up or down a medieval turn. But for future campaigns, I want to introduce a house rule that you can not turn anyone into an animal you have never seen before (this is the same rule that used to apply to wildlife in the past). Thus, players will not be able to use these horses unless they are connected to the և T-Rex of the monkeys. I also think that my players have abused Sharpener's artificial intelligence, which should not be useful in a polymorphic image.

The main event of the temple in history is the discovery of the Word of Arber by Amber Gustav, who predicted that the last of the three artifacts would be useful to Mrs. Eva. Find out where the Strathists came from. Each of them collected gifts as dark as bones, as they flew at you. But then they were all cruel, like monsters.

When they entered Castel Raveloft, they remembered the damage. In the temple, they find a sacred treasure that throws 16d10 on a deliberately evil creature (no, you can not throw it in the straw as a weapon). While Strad was lying on the ground in the yard, the group entered the barn and hinted that it was better to scatter the soil in the grave first, և we will continue next time.

Solasta half price

Thasealbh agam air Solasta: Crùn nam Maighstirean air Steam oir mhaoinich mi an geama. Chluich mi an geama tron beta agus fhuair mi DLC a chuir barrachd chlasaichean ris, agus mar sin cluichidh mi a-rithist e cho luath ‘s a lorgas mi e. Chan eil an geama le tìm gu cinnteach foirfe, ach is e an dreach coimpiutair as fhaisge de riaghailtean Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition a lorgas tu. Mar sin, chan urrainn dhomh ach comhairle a thoirt dha a cheannach aig leth phrìs anns an fhèill Steam gnàthach.

Not much spillover

Skyrim is one of the best-selling video games in history, selling more than 30 million copies. Of course, the creators of the Skyrim board games are hoping for a distribution, and video game fans will want to buy the board game. But about two weeks after the campaign began, it received only 4,578 people. With prizes of over a million dollars, it's not bad for a table game campaign. But I think the campaign company has high expectations. The trailer received 20,000 views on the company channel and 250,000 viewers on the IGN channel, but apparently had no bite.

My personal belief is that if Modifius had created a physical prototype of the game and placed it on YouTube in the top 10 board game channels, the fundraising campaign would have been much better. Although these channels have few subscribers, I have noticed that the table games played on these channels are doing well on many people's financial platforms. Right now I'm playing on the excellent Sleeping Gods game board, with lots of prototypes and 12,000 fans on Kickstarter. Skyrim board games do not look very appealing to fans of board games available only on the Tablet Simulator. And that does not even convince video game fans to come to the table.

Physical models are no better than tablet simulations or similar virtual versions. The parabola makes the game "more realistic" and consequently there is less trust risk. If you can set up a prototype, it looks like your game is ready, but it might be a good idea or not. For a potential fan, watching a prototype play on YouTube removes a lot of doubt about a fundraising campaign.

Another option that fans might miss is Elder Scrolls V-Sky Skyrim, an adventure game that did not look like a "big" game when I saw it in Tabletop Simulator. I support the basic version because it looks good and is fun to try, but I doubt it will be better than the other games I already own. That's one of the reasons I was not too keen on the $ 300 luxury version of the game. I defend my commitment to this.

Price stickiness

My gas company increased their next year recurring payments to 250% this year. As the laws of supply and demand increase and demand outstrips supply, inflation appears to be alive in the region.

However, when you're shopping for Christmas gifts now, things can be very different. There are plenty of freebies, especially consumer electronics, that don't live up to the name but don't get it. The biggest example is the PlayStation 5, which came out a year ago and is still in demand. Scalper's price on platforms like eBay reflects this, but the official MSRP hasn't changed. Apple sold me an iPad on their website, but the estimated delivery date is approaching Christmas and my family is risking visiting me empty-handed. Some used cars are now more expensive than new cars because the new version still has the old official price but is not available.

This economic term is expensive. Mainly because they don't know that demand will grow and don't want to scare off future customers. Here, people willing to pay big still can't get what they want or take advantage of the scandal. You can give your kid some money and tell them to queue up for the PS5, but it might not be what you want but it's a frustration for them.

The big question is how temporary the current economic situation is. The correct answer: not all. And prices can get stuck on both sides: Today, when supply problems are solved by people raising prices because of lack of supply, some people don't fully reverse this increase. And as things get more expensive, PS5 supply issues can still be solved today by parents who can't afford to buy a PS5 for their kids next Christmas.

Triage

Europe is experiencing a "fourth wave" of coronavirus infection, caused mainly by a combination of a delta climate and a cooler climate, stronger than "herd immunity" against vaccination. Although there is a lot of misinformation about vaccines on the Internet, the fourth wave gives us fairly accurate statistical information because the numbers are so important. The two main points are that if you are vaccinated, you will be about 30 times less likely to contract coronavirus than if you were not vaccinated; And once you have contracted the virus, if you were vaccinated, you would be 30 times less likely to die than if you had not been vaccinated. This means that if you count the entire chain from infection to death, a person who is currently uninfected is a thousand times less likely to die from Covid than an unvaccinated person who is currently uninfected.

What isn't being said is that this statistic is only valid as long as all ICU beds are full and all ventilators are plugged in, and that's where we go. At some point, the health system will be overwhelmed and doctors will have to practice triage , which decides on a series of ethical criteria who lives and who dies. Screening is bad news for non-vaccinators. An important principle in triage is that if you have two people who need care, but can only treat one person, you need to make sure the person has a better chance of surviving the treatment. Since the vaccine greatly increases your chances of survival, all other things being equal, a doctor will always prefer to give a vaccinated person a ventilator over an unvaccinated person, because the vaccinated person has a better chance of escaping from it.

For obvious reasons, the authorities are trying not to offend that part of the population that does not dare to be vaccinated, trying to offend after vaccination, not telling the bitter truth. But the hard truth is that if you don't want to get vaccinated, you are now a thousand times more likely to die from COVID, and if the overall situation worsens in your current trajectory, you could die in triage. All the talk about “vaccination for the good of society” is not wrong, but that is not the main reason you should get vaccinated. You must be vaccinated to stay healthy, because the small risk of side effects from the vaccine is small compared to the massive increase in life expectancy if you take it.

Patreon - How much is content worth?

I want to thank my clients on Patreon for making this blog possible! Ehh, let's just say I do not have a Patreon. I only have one donation key: "Buy Tobold Coffee" which has been used exactly twice in the last 3 years. So thank you both! The sad truth is that my content generally has no value in money.

I now follow many YouTube channels and the phrase about sponsorship is often repeated. What no one is saying is that there is no reason for anyone on Patreon to support this type of content, because you can be sure that the content will be created anyway. Yes, I feel sorry for the two people who donated to my blog, but their donation had no effect on my content creation. Since there is not enough reason to do so, only a few people work. Spiffing Brit, for example, has a YouTube channel with 2.66 million subscribers . Patreon has 1,111 regular members , which is only 0.04% of his followers. Smaller channels are more involved, but visitors are less than 1% of subscribers.

"Creating content for this channel" is probably a lie, so why do people no longer support creators on Patreon? Probably a factor as to why they're doing so poorly. Why pay some videos for a guy who earns $ 3 a week or $ 5 a week when you can get a basic Netflix subscription for $ 9 a month? What's more, it's harder to download Netflix for free than to download the YouTube channel for free, because free download is the default option on YouTube. It is assumed that you paid "enough" for the content shown by displaying this ad at the beginning.

I moved away from Patreon because I was afraid of subscribers. I already have Netflix subscriptions, Amazon Prime subscriptions and XBox Game Pass for PC subscriptions. I have over 100 "subscriptions" for YouTube channels (free) so I took the minimum Ptreon membership ($ 1 per month) for each of them, but I paid more than $ 1,000 per year. To watch YouTube. I would better pay $ 12 a month for the YouTube premium, but it seems too expensive to me. So I think I will put on the ads, thank you very much.

Historically, "benefactors" are rich. But most of the 1,111 Spiffing Brits sponsors, who earn 5,246 a month, are likely to earn less per month than Patreon. It's not like I're saving a few hundred dollars a month for the smaller channels, but when the creator becomes famous enough, they become poor to support the rich. Although I myself admire the donation, I do not ask them because I have a high-paying, high-paying job and I would be upset if someone gave me more money than I needed. I create content because it satisfies my desire to hold my opinion in public. I'm very skeptical about the idea of creating content as an “influencer”. It is a slippery slope when a person points out something he or she loves the most.

Board games and math problems

I'm pretty good at math because that's what my degree and my main job require, so I learn more about math than the average person. And if you are good at math, the skills you will acquire is to know if something is a math problem.

Imagine for a second you were transposed into the karmic driven world of Earl. If you have precise information about A and B, or enough equations related to them, you can solve this mathematical problem. For example, if you know that "A - B = 1", "A * B = 6", you can calculate that A must be 3 and B must be 2, so A + B = 5: but if you know that there A match For example, AA, BB are numbers that are determined by a six-sided die roll, not a math problem that can be solved. You can still do the math, for example mentioning that A + B is probably 7, but you won't know for sure what A + B is until you roll the dice.

One of the oldest classifications used for board games is the Ameritras games, which are divided into European games . It is clear that there are many errors in this classification. European games don't have to be made in Europe, ameritrush games don't have to be trash. But often this is the difference. European games are math problems, but not American games.

American-style games are often themed games with a lot of random descriptive elements. If the game allows you to make decisions, those decisions determine which pages of the story book to read or which story cards to read, which is not a mathematical problem unless you know the contents of the whole book or the whole deck. Story card (what you shouldn't do). And that means your math skills can be used to make smart decisions ("If I did, I'd have to roll 5 or more of those two six-sided dice, it would probably work"), but there's still a lack of motivation. I know what will happen. Sometimes everyone at the table laughs or sighs when you finally get 2 with those two dice.

European-style games often have little to no randomness, no storybooks or cards with unfamiliar content, and little or no player interaction. The words "stuffing" or "table building" are used to describe games where the player chooses an action knowing exactly what will happen. Put your staff in this case, * you will get * 2 points. Now the strategy of this game is to create math problems that most people can't solve in their minds. You hire staff to buy resources, you use those resources to buy buildings, buildings build other resources or create new employees, some activities require a certain amount of victory points. In some cases, there is absolutely no match or interaction between the players, so the game is often more cunning or skill based on multiple moves than math, and whoever has the most points wins in the end. Obviously, if you perform exactly the same sequence of moves in the next game, the chances or interactions of the players will not affect the outcome, your winning points will remain the same. The results are determined.

Now computer math is much better than humans. If you're playing European-style determining games, computers can solve equations, determine the best order of moves, or quickly learn how to optimize with some machine learning algorithms. You can't beat the computer in this game. Although people rarely play European games against the computer, it happens that people play these games against someone who has played them more often than before. And if machines can learn the best order of movement, humans can learn it too. Generally more experienced players at least know which moves are better than others, even if they have not mastered the whole sequence of the best moves.

I don't really like European games. I know them as math problems and for fun I don’t like to solve math problems. With the determining nature of the game "John suggests a game at the table because it's his favorite game, other players don't know the game" until "John wins". I also noticed that the action game "I put an employee here to get 2 grand" was frustrating at first because there is no opening and no luck. I like to play dice or read story book page 127 / storyboard page 127 because I don't know what the result will be. So every step of my favorite American-style storytelling game is a test. No need to win after passing X, I like collaborative play.

However, most games do not fit 100% into any one of these categories. Classic European-style games like Settler of Catan have dice to determine the advantage of assets in direct interaction of players with riders, so they are not completely determinants. However, I still prefer American style / narrative / themed games. I would rather describe "I put my partner on the farm - 2 grand to power" than "I take my hero to the side of the ogre, roll a few dice to see if I hit him". However, I like to tackle some minor resources and random mitigation options in my games. I really liked the god of sleep with whom my wife and I played, except for every step that started with putting a crew on one side of the ship. I like that I don’t know what will happen if I decide to go somewhere. But I like that if a fight starts, for example, I have no luck, I can use some of my command points to deactivate it, or by managing my fatigue wounds carefully, I can make it more probable in battle. Victory I don't want my game to be a math problem where I have to calculate 3 steps ahead, but I'm good at the small amount of math involved in guessing the possibility of a die roll.

COVID math

Last week I posted some "about" math on "Covid" and of course I was wrong. And it might be interesting to hear where I made that mistake, because it's usually appropriate.

Based on the number of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in any region of Germany, I have calculated a number that will protect you from infection. While I still believe that the vaccine provides some protection against infection on any given day, it may not be appropriate at all if you think about it for a long time. Think about it. In the long run, what is the probability that you will get the usual flu at least once in your life? Obviously, this number is very close to 100%, because as low as your risk of being infected one day is, there are many days in life. If the flu virus is everywhere, or if it is "endemic", sooner or later it will satisfy you, even if you live in a sparsely populated area, not much comes out.

It is now almost identical to the Covid and Delta versions. Covid has become endemic. No matter how much social distance you have, you can't be stuck in a bubble forever. So sooner or later *you get *covid*, whether you get vaccinated or not. Thus, the only vaccine protection statistic is a British study that found that unvaccinated people were 32 times more likely to die than vaccinated people .

According to The Economist, estimating the real number of deaths from Covid, the probability of death for an immunosuppressed person is approximately 1 in 300. Thus, the risk of death for a vaccinated person is approximately 1 in 10,000 . In the United States , an unvaccinated person is just as likely to die from a coronavirus as from a weapon, where they are less likely to die. A person who has been vaccinated before dying of sunburn. Of course, the lifetime probability of dying from COVID is not that precise, since we only have 2 years left. The virus may develop into more dangerous mutations, the chance of death may be as high as 1 in 100 deaths, or the new treatment may reduce the risk of death.

None of this changes my original message. Vaccination increases your chances of surviving COVID. The risk of receiving the vaccine is much less than the risk of not receiving it. Big Bird Okay, you have to get vaccinated.

Miniatures and board games

I do not hate sketches. I bought some 3D printers that could make thumbnails for my D&D games, COVID made it difficult to play the games in the real world and we switched to Roll20. So I printed a lot of orcs and saw that a single color 3D printed thumbnail is much better than a simple 2D color drawing on a game board. So I started hating miniature in board games. To explain why, let's take a look at the box office photo of Kingdom Death: Monsters.
You see? Lots of unassembled plastic parts. This has 3 consequences: 1) Kingdom Death: Monsters cost only about $ 400 for the main box; 2) If you can not assemble complex small plastic parts into real miniatures, you will not be able to play; and 3) if you can not draw thumbnail, the end result will not look better than monochrome 3D printed thumbnail. Now these 3 problems have different degrees in different games. Some come with already composite miniatures. Some have even painted it, but it is obviously more expensive.

The bottom line is that there are some board games I can play if they came with cardboard stands instead of miniatures. But there are thumbnails and only small pictures that prevent me from getting the game. I find the idea of Kingdom Death: Monster's Settlement Survival Game very interesting (even if it's a little difficult), but I'm sure I would not spend a fortune on something that would take my hours of dirty work to put it all together. do not make. . Some people naturally collect and paint plastic models for fun; but it is certainly not for everyone. Although on the last Kickstarter, 13 people pledged $ 2,500 for the game. I'll wait for the $ 100 carton version that never comes out.

Better D&D, Best D&D

There are a lot of discussions in various forums and YouTube videos like "Which is the best version of D&D?" Or "What RPG is better than D&D?" Most of these conversations don't really discuss "better" or "best", which makes the whole conversation meaningless. There's a very simple argument for making D&D the best RPG system and V its best version, because it's a system that a lot of people play. As far as the player is concerned, 5E and Dean will earn the best statistical chance. Once you have a team together, all bets are off. I know bands who prefer the fourth version rather than the fifth. I know many groups that prefer other systems than D&D. Asking about the best movie on Netflix is a bit like finding the most popular or top rated movie by critics, but for any viewer, the "best" movie can be very different.

What makes the question "better" is the fact that every RPG is a set of rules. You are not following the rules properly. For example, you can try the game Dungeons & Dragons, but the quality only depends to some extent on the set of rules; Much depends on the players, the pastor, and the adventure they are playing. For a particular group, some systems may fit better than others, and some adventures may complement some systems better than others. I've played the Steampunk campaign twice using D&D rules, but I understand the argument that Steampunk rules might be a better fit.

If you don't think a certain thing can be good, then it's reasonable to think that Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition is a good rule of thumb. But the current 5E version won't last forever: a system compatible "evolution" is known for 2024 , and at some point the current "VI version" will appear or be prepared for other system rules. In order of most popular. Therefore, even for someone who thinks 5E is the "best", it is still important to know how to improve the system by house rules or future expenses.

So where are 5E D&D's weaknesses? One of these results is certainly the first result of skills: strength, efficiency, constitution, ingenuity, wisdom and charm. Fifth Edition uses the same stats for many different things, from crash to shock, damage range, skill check, and savings. Description Some skill levels are more important than others. Flexibility is more important than strength, as you can take the same damage with the same hitting weapons and tactics, skill bullets and skill checks are more common than strength. . Investigations. Intelligence, like the main stats, is not only used in small amounts, but also in bulk storage, and the associated skill checks are all "knowledge checks". When people aren't trying to do something, they often don't know what to do.

Another obvious weakness is that the gameplay is unbalanced. In Fifth Edition, the rules of concentration are that some witches are inherently weak; The Amazing Level 5 Cloudkil ends well in most cases less than Level 3 Fireball . In general, balance doesn't seem to be very important in VV's design, with vaguely unbalanced parts and components being much better than others. Some seem to be based on the idea of balancing things out on a "normal adventure day" in the middle of a long vacation, which is unrealistic for most groups and campaigns. . No.

Although some people don't care much about balance, the defect can have serious consequences that are difficult to manage. This is especially true for inexperienced people, they choose a careless character class and then get upset. I don't think it's a coincidence that the biggest "problem player" event was with a magician at the time; Before this part is anything more than a small magic spell, you need to upgrade the spell adequately in certain subcategories and options. A player who thinks his behavior is the weakest and funniest of all is more likely to act.

I don't think all of these things will be handled by D&D in 2024, but I hope some things will be resolved. Because if the most popular system isn't very good, it really should be. The internet is making the system more popular by posting virtual spreadsheets or game sessions, pens, and cards in places like YouTube. Presence and recognition are essential when choosing an RPG system; A few people dig deep into the rules of different systems to find out which one is "best".

Kickstarter vs. Gamefound

Of moet Gamefound soortgelijke regels invoeren?
