The pitfalls of stopping immigration

Every right-wing party in the world has an anti-immigration manifesto on their agenda. Even though it's completely wrong, immigrants raping your wife, stealing your job, taking advantage of charities are very popular with voters. It is an economic fact that refugees are often neglected to fill low-paying jobs. What if you dumped all those strangers? Nothing good.

It seems that our way of life requires cheap foreign labour. Refugees don't just pick fruit, they also drive trucks with the supply chains needed to bring fruit (and everything in between) to supermarket shelves. Instead of "stealing" someone's labor, immigrants do unwanted work because they are uncomfortable and pay less.

So now Brexit has become an interesting socio-economic experiment. If the UK can't feed the supply chain cheaply, what are its options? How much do you need to improve working conditions to make these jobs truly affordable for local residents? Also, if you pay the truck driver well, how much does the food in the supermarket cost? Initial estimates range from 6% to 9% and do not appeal to the average buyer.

I'm sure politicians will blame others for these problems and the inflation that goes with them (the 'other' in the UK is usually the EU), so it's important to start a more honest conversation with voters about immigration. . How much do they hate persecution? How much are you willing to pay to look after refugees?

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous came out on Thursday. And this time I bought the game when it came out. Or actually the day before release to get pre-order bonuses. Well, how's the game?

Simply put, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is pretty much the same game as Pathfinder: Kingmaker, minus the orb. He'd rather get a Heroes of Might & Magic style subgame, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. If you haven't played Kingmaker or Wrath yet, Kingmaker costs €20 and Wrath costs €50, and Wrath is definitely nothing more than a double Kingmaker. None of the Pathfinder games are particularly suitable for beginners. Wrath has 25 classes, with 5 subclasses each. If you don't know the system well enough, you probably won't know which of the 100+ options to pick, and end up with a pre-built character. Or you spend hours searching the internet for the perfect build for your character, which makes the character much more effective, but not necessarily more fun to play. In any case, there are not many main roles in the group, so these 100+ subclasses are too many.

After I started Kingmaker with a ghost and then again with a wizard, this time I went straight to the wizard. It is clear that I have many wizard friends left and only one priest colleague. And the Owlcat games subtly teased arcane spells, telling the tale of battling demons that were more likely to resist spells or the elements than Kingmaker's enemies. On the other hand, the Wizard is still a lot of fun to play. And once you're out of the tutorial mission and into the actual game, the first vendor sells all the scrolls your wizard might want to learn spells from, eliminating the class' biggest drawback.

Wrath of the Righteous can be played in turn-based mode, just like the patched version of Kingmaker. This is what I prefer. My group is only level 3, but they already have so many different battle options that I find the real-time battles too chaotic to be fun. Outside of combat, the game is mostly about completing missions and interacting with characters, sometimes with skill checks. You complete these missions in multiple locations on the main map, each of which becomes a combat map for you to explore and complete. Wrath of the Kingmaker is what XCOM 2 represents for XCOM 1 - in the sequel, the bad guys have won and it's up to you to bring back the good ones.

Because I loved Kingmaker and played it for over 180 hours, Wrath of the Righteous was a very interesting game for me. I would like further improvements to Kingmaker, especially in terms of mining and inventory management. But apart from the button to sell all unnecessary loot, the gameplay here is about the same. Basically, I would only recommend Wrath of the Rightey to those who have already played Kingmaker and want more.

Do you want to win a lot of RPG and board games?

In the nature of the lottery, your chances of winning are very slim. But when you can enter the lottery for free, your chances of winning big are not so bad. There is a raffle to win the entire 5E book collection + all 3 board games at your disposal + the Tanares RPG . Tanares RPG is a Kickstarter project for a 5E compatible RPG book, and as a promotion, Dragori Games is running this free sweepstakes. You can increase your chances of winning by watching some YouTube videos and spreading the word, which I did in the link above. So, the more people click on this link, the more likely they are to get cubic meters of game material. You can then create and publish your link and we have a great pyramid scheme that works. :) Seriously, the links have fewer "raffle tickets" than YouTube videos, so this might be your best bet.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous army management

In my previous post about this game, I mentioned that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has a subplot similar to the Battle of Heroes of Might and Magic. Now that I have been playing with this system for some time, I have something more to say.

Like Heroes of Might and Magic, you will have armies that take the generals around the main map and when they clash with enemy forces, the battle begins. Wars are based on a grid and your general can participate using spells, for example. Unlike Heroes of Might and Magic, you can take a certain number of casualties and recover at the end of a fight, so fighting a few less casualties does not deplete your army. You can recruit new soldiers every week, earn troops with your adventuring team through event or interview opportunities, and you can generally become stronger as you gain experience.

An interesting difference is how the Army game interacts with the Adventure Team RPG. Basically, each army has a one-day movement limit and your adventurers spend time moving and resting. This forces you to switch between two games in a row: you play with your army until it stops, then you play with your adventure team until the next day, when you can move your army again. On the main map, enemy troops are displayed as an army and an adventure. And the road is crossed in adventure mode. Therefore, you must remove the army and defeat the enemy army that is blocking the path of your adventurous team.

I think if you like RPG and fantasy fighting games then the system is good. The wrath of the pious army that runs the Kingmaker's kingdom is more than "playing". However, like Heroes of Might & Magic, you'll better ensure that your army doesn't constantly suffer casualties, as this can severely hamper your progress in the game. Although you can turn your adventurous gold into a way to buy troops, the number of troops you can recruit each week is very limited and it will take a long time to rebuild a lost army. If you really lose the battle, you basically have to save the beast and try something else. Enemy forces tell you you can win, which tells you where your adventurous team can go, an exciting new way to slowly unlock places on the world map.

Dice Legacy

Although there are thousands of video games today, there are fewer different video game genres, and some games are very similar. For example, it is very similar to Humanity Civilization or, more clearly, Pathfinder. It is very similar to Wrath of the Righteous Pathfinder. To the Royal Author. Finding games that * don't * are rare these days. this year I can only think of two: Wildermyth and the newly released Dice Legacy .

Legacy says it calls for dice-building urban survival, which is a bit of a stretch. This is the game. My first tip if you want to try it out is to play your first game on an easy difficulty. Otherwise, you might try to guess the mechanics of the game, because some thieves are burning your entire city. In Dice Legacy you build cities / towns / colonies in a world in a ring. So your map is not very big, but rather long. The aim of the game is to expand your city once around the ring and capture the buildings of the enemy port at the other end.

To do this, you need to use your population, you can only have 12 (or less, temporarily). But your population is made up of dice of different colors. In the beginning they were all crazy farmers. Over time you can build Citizen's Dice, Warrior's Dice, Merchant's Dice and Monk's Dice. You can also make your own construction dice later! All dice have 6 sides. You can only use faces that appear. For example, a farmer has "work", the two sides "harvest", "construction", "battle" and "recon". When the matrix is used, it turns gray. You can roll your dice to turn gray again and give each dice a random result.

The obvious difficulty is that if you need something specific quickly, usually the result of a “fight” against some enemy attackers, you may not get that result on your reels and end up in a panic sometimes. But each time you roll the dice the duration decreases, so you have to go back with the food. Basically, Dice Legacy is similar to a board game for staff training, but with the added stress of randomness and real-time dice.

Personally, I really like Dice Legacy. Negative reviews compare the game to a “time IQ test”. I agree, but I find it more positive. This * is * not a game of chance at all. You need to think really well and quickly to make it work against randomness. The game is quite difficult, even on “standard” difficulty, and once you pass games like this, there are several ways to make it more difficult.

That said, I’m sure I’ll play for more than 10 hours and then delete it. Each game lasts a few hours and is repetitive, so the value of repetition is not so great. The “naughty” aspect is not well developed. You can "upgrade" the dice and get 2 solid dice in the next game; but rolling and rolling the dice is already the final game. If you set the difficulty too high and you lose the game, you may not get the dice for progress, so the next game will not be easier. Different masters don’t add much variety, and different scenarios are designed to be somehow more punishing than to offer a lot of diversity.

So I would definitely not recommend Dice Legacy at all. If you’re willing to pay $ 20 to make a very difficult 10-hour puzzle game, this may be the game for you. If you’re looking for something calmer or prefer actions to thoughts, you may not be your target audience. That’s why Steam’s opinions are “confused”.

Why you shouldn't listen to financial advice from your bank

A significant portion of my retirement savings is currently in a simple savings account, where the meager 0.1% per annum I receive is well below the inflation rate. So I am slowly losing money. And my bank writes to me that they noticed the money in my savings account and recommends that I invest this money in one of their investment products. Sounds like good advice, right? Not so fast!

The vast majority of the investment advice you get, whether from professional bankers or dubious YouTube influencers, is based on hindsight - look, the investment product I sold made so much money in the last X months! This argument is misleading, and therefore the SEC actually requires funds to write in their prospectuses that past performance does not indicate future performance. In fact, the opposite is often the case: if an asset class has shown impressive growth over the past X months, it is becoming more and more likely that it will experience a " correction " or even a real collapse. So when deciding whether to invest in stocks, look at Schiller's price-to-earnings ratio . It currently stands at 38.7 versus a long-term average of 16; It was not higher until shortly before the dot-com crash. If you invest in equities or an equity fund right now, a correction or collapse will most likely occur somewhere within the next 12 months and you will lose most of your investment.

So why would a friendly banker tell me to invest now? Do not know the price / earnings ratio? Well, it turns out that the banker has a conflict of interest. Since the bank pays for this, its main purpose is to make sure the bank makes money, and not me. And the money in my savings account does not bring much money into my bank. When I buy their investment products, my bank receives the standard mutual fund fee . These fees are completely independent of the performance of the investment product. In other words, the risk (the presence of which had to be indicated by law) is entirely at my expense. When I buy an investment product from them and lose my shirt, my bank always makes the same money. Advise me to invest without risk for my bank, but certainly not for me.

So what about other investment options? Buy stink memes on RobinHood? Buy cryptocurrency? Well, I'm not saying you should never do that. But you have to understand that it is not about investing. My personal gaming experience is positive: I won $ 700 in the week of my life I spent in Las Vegas. But I pre-determined how much I was willing to lose, and set aside a $ 1,000 pool for it. I will stop playing if I lose, but luckily I managed to win. Fun but not reliable investment advice. The stems themselves, cryptocurrencies, collectibles, or whatever you heard on the internet were a definite way to get rich quick. You can make money, but it is far from mandatory, and most of these products can easily lose much more than a balanced stock portfolio in the event of a stock market crash. This is not the right investment product for my retirement plan. Feel free to set aside any money you can afford to lose and play with it, but nothing more!

Sometimes the best investment advice you can get is not to invest now. When you open the newspaper and read an article about a terrible stock market crash, it's probably time to invest. In addition, sooner or later, as inflation rises, bond yields will rise. The era of ultra-low inflation and ultra-low interest rates is a historical anomaly and cannot last forever. And while investing in home ownership can be risky for speculative reasons, investing in a home in which you plan to live for many years is relatively safe as long as you do not incur too much mortgage debt. I intend to do so and ignore the kind letter from my bank.

Self-destructive?

In the last 250 years of US history, there has been 1 revolution, 1 civil war and 59 presidential elections. This would mean that it is easier to gain political power through voting than it is to gain political power through violence. Now different political parties tend to believe in different things. But it looks like a party that doesn't believe in elections will eventually be fruitful. Political activists around the world have a long history of organizing election boycotts , but in most cases the elections were still valid and non-participating parties lost by default.

Now a very useless person who lost an election can understandably claim that the vote against him was rigged. This is not a progressive strategy, it is simply a manifestation of personal weakness in the inability to accept defeat. It gets a little ridiculous when you say you blatantly cheated by losing the election . But the mentality of saving face by not accepting reality is perfectly clear.

As an active political strategy, claiming that the elections were largely rigged seems like political suicide for any party. How should a supporter of a political party react when he is told that his votes will not count? Basically, you have a choice between rebellion and indifference. As I mentioned at the beginning, the current upheaval took place in the United States in less than a century and has a historical success rate of 50%. Small scale violent protests are more common but have a 0% success rate. Given the low likelihood of violence and the normal human tendency to be indifferent, most people who think it's pointless to vote will simply stay at home.

Now it is clear that the party that wins any election is usually very confident that everything went well with the vote. The party that won the last election reinforces the belief that their votes differ, which motivates them to vote next time. Thus, the risk of electoral indifference of the party can turn into a death spiral: in close elections, the most motivated party wins, then the more motivated, when the indifferent party loses and becomes more and more convinced of the futility of the elections. And then it can fail if that makes it difficult to vote.

My prediction remains that this will not end well. Even as an outsider who sees only US news, politicians speak of the violence as a decision to "take our country back." If this trend does not change, they may return to their country in 1861.

Gloomhaven digital release date announced

Gloomhaven is a fantastic strategic game. In addition to the main board game, there is a "Lion's Jaw" version and a digital version of Steam , which is currently in pre-release, but the full version will be available on October 20th. And, surprisingly, you may need one of these versions and stay away from the original game.

I look forward to the full digital release of Glomhaven, which will allow me to campaign digitally. In early access, Guild Master Mode provides some experience in the campaign, but also provides different rules for managing characters between short histories and battles. The published version has these two modes, which is a lot of content. You get more content than the basic board game version but at a lower price, so this is a great deal. For me, the main attraction of the digital version will be the single player. I'll be back to the board game version to play with my wife again. The table board game is more interesting to me than two people sharing the same mouse, keyboard and screen.

One of the reasons we don't play often is that the Glumhaven main box is a big problem with 2,600 rooms. This is one of my board games. In my other games, either I didn't need anything like that, or I could print a simple token tray in 3D. Since there is no place to stay in the construction for a long time at the Glomehaven table, this means that a long process of preparation and assembly is required for each session.

Therefore, for anyone who wants to try the board game version, I suggest starting with the lion's jaw. It's exactly the same tactical warfare system, but it's easier to learn and easier to adapt. I recommend the Steam version for a single player game. I hope Asmodi Digital will create a digital version of Frostaven in the future. Because it’s another game that uses the same incredible strategic combat system, but in a bigger box that I haven’t planned to buy yet. In board games, "excessive play" is really important.

How “far” is “far right”?

Germany has a major federal election this weekend that will determine who will be the next chancellor after Angela Merkel. Unlike the one-party system in China or the two-party system in the United States, German voters can choose from many different parties from right to left.

Now, even though I no longer live in Germany, I am still a German citizen and I vote (of course by mail). And by putting the constituency on the left, I want to correct some of the views foreigners may have about a German "far right" group.

Today and in recent decades, German politics is more centralized than in any other country in the world. The current government is an alliance between the largest center-right party and the largest center-left party. "Extreme" in this context means the right, an anti-immigration party that does not like Muslims and is skeptical of the European Union. So they often differ from the leaders of other countries like Donald Trump or Boris Johnson. Of course, people in the history of Nazi Germany are more concerned about this kind of politics in Germany than anywhere else. However, it is only "very" accurate on a relative scale, or on a scale designed by the media guards.

Which brings us to Voltaire, and the quote often calls it wrong by saying "I don't like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death." Which is almost the opposite of today's culture of rejection. I am very much an immigrant, basically an immigrant myself. But I think that in a multi-party system there should be an anti-immigrant group. Multiculturalism is work, not for everyone.

As a counter-argument to Merkel's claim that her policy has no alternatives, alternatives to Germany were mentioned. And in this case, as much as I like Merkel's politics, I certainly don't want to be in a political system without alternatives. We need political dialogue and open discussions, not demagoguery. Morally correct principles also require explanation and persuasion. Because if we don't, we will end up with a political system where there is no middle ground between the "extreme" right and the "extreme" left and no compromise is possible.

RoomSketcher

Moving is something that most families don't do very often because it takes a lot of work, planning, and preparation. And since this is something I'll likely be doing in the next year or so, I looked around to see what software would be available to help. And I was positively impressed by Roomschetter - there are plenty of free features for drawing floor plans and arranging furniture. And for other useful features, there are a number of subscription schemes or individual schemes at reasonable prices. In the end I signed up for a subscription and that included a credit for a service where I could submit photos of my floor plans and have them coded into the software with all the right measurements.

Why do I need all this? I plan to move from a one-story apartment to a slightly larger two-story house. The size of the room will be different. And not all furniture suits us, the main example is the built-in kitchen. RoomSketcher makes me visualize a new home in 2D and 3D. I can move the furniture easily and see if the large closet in our current room would fit any room in the new home. I can 3D print plans for all the furniture to show the operators where each item goes. Or I can make a live 3D interactive guide to visualize how the new home will be designed. Everything is really clean and useful.
