Now, even though I no longer live in Germany, I am still a German citizen and I vote (of course by mail). And by putting the constituency on the left, I want to correct some of the views foreigners may have about a German "far right" group.
Today and in recent decades, German politics is more centralized than in any other country in the world. The current government is an alliance between the largest center-right party and the largest center-left party. "Extreme" in this context means the right, an anti-immigration party that does not like Muslims and is skeptical of the European Union. So they often differ from the leaders of other countries like Donald Trump or Boris Johnson. Of course, people in the history of Nazi Germany are more concerned about this kind of politics in Germany than anywhere else. However, it is only "very" accurate on a relative scale, or on a scale designed by the media guards.
Which brings us to Voltaire, and the quote often calls it wrong by saying "I don't like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death." Which is almost the opposite of today's culture of rejection. I am very much an immigrant, basically an immigrant myself. But I think that in a multi-party system there should be an anti-immigrant group. Multiculturalism is work, not for everyone.
As a counter-argument to Merkel's claim that her policy has no alternatives, alternatives to Germany were mentioned. And in this case, as much as I like Merkel's politics, I certainly don't want to be in a political system without alternatives. We need political dialogue and open discussions, not demagoguery. Morally correct principles also require explanation and persuasion. Because if we don't, we will end up with a political system where there is no middle ground between the "extreme" right and the "extreme" left and no compromise is possible.
